Day 3 – Mendoza & Penitentes

19th December 2022

Today we woke up after 10 hours of sleep, finally catching up the previous days of sleepless nights. We went down to breakfast and visited the local hire shop to get our rented equipment and finally complete our equipment checklist.

Good thing we did because directly following it our guide came to our rooms to do a kit list, and make sure we had the right equipment for the mountain, which we passed, other than he didn’t like our socks, but they should we still be fine, we will see if we come back in one piece our without our toes.

Next we had to repack all of the equipment we had layed out, into our kit bags and our luggage for anything we would be leaving here. We ended up packing our kit bag with equipment we wont only use past basecamp (our boots, down jackets…) and another one with anything we would need up to basecamp. We dropped off our luggage att reception to be kept safe until we came back, and our kit onto our mini bus.

From the hotel we drove to get closer to the mountain, a journey of about 3 hours by car through the vallleys of the andes. We did a quick stop for lunch where we had milanessas (giant flat chicken nugget) and bought some snacks for the journey up.

When we arrived at our camp for the night we were shown to our glamping igloo with beds and towels inside . Since we had time to spend before our daily briefing we ended up laying in the sun for a bit.

At our briefing we were told about the plan for the next day and a little bit more information about how our bodies get acclimatised as we go up the mountain.

Following the briefing, we had a really good dinner with some local wine.
