Day 5 – Attempt 2 to fly to Lukla

11th October 2023

Today was once again an early day, we woke up at 4:30 and boarded our bus once again for another try at getting onto the plane. After our bumpy one-hour bus ride through the dark, we arrived at the airport. This time we felt lucky as we go to go inside of the airport instead of just staying outside, which looked promising. Still in the dark we brought all our bags and had them weighed whilst we waited for the sun to rise and the first flights to depart.

As the sun started to rise the weather looked promising both where we were and on the webcam of Lukla, so we were allowed to go through a questionable security, which looked like toilets from the outside as they were divided in gents and ladies. After making it through we sat on the benches and saw our bags move closer to the aircraft on the tarmac, one step closer to flying out.

As the sun had risen we were told that although the weather was great in Lukla and where we were, unfortunately there was one hill in between us which was still covered in clouds and we would have to wait for the clouds to clear up before our flight could depart. So we sat not he benches and waited an hour, 2 hours, 3 hours, reading my kindle and napping. unfortunately in that time the weather had changed in Lukla and clouds had descended onto the airport and were planned to be there for the rest of the day.

At this stage our guide asked us if we wanted to pay for helicopters to go instead trying again tomorrow for the plane, which we all agreed to as we had already wasted 2 days. Our guide tried to get helicopters but wasn’t able to get any for today as they were already booked up so around 3pm we gave up once again and headed back to the hotel for more Dal Bhat.
