Day 10 – Jinja

8th January 2017

Today we got up at 5h30 to pack our tents ahead of everyone for our rafting day. We left at around 6h30 and took a 2h30 journey to Jinja.

Once in Jinja, we all signed up for our full day of rafting. we had a quick cup of tea before taking our breakfast onto the bus for an hour drive to where we would be starting our adventure. Once there we helped get the raft off the trailer and push it down a ramp into the water. We then walked down and climbed on board, once on board we had our safety briefing, where they showed us everything we had to do including what we should do if our boat flipped over.

From there we took our first rapid a 5, where we were supposed to fall down a small waterfall, but we missed it so we instead went down a side rapid, which led us to do a few rapids with a 4 rating. by the time we arrived at our last rapid of the morning we were told to walk on the rocks as to avoid a really hard level 6 rapid. So we walked down and got back on the raft after it had gone through. we then headed to a level 5 rapid, but unfortunately, since we didn’t paddle hard enough we missed the window, which meant we were all propelled out of the raft as it turned upside down. We were under the water for what felt like ages, it was really hard to catch a breath, and I accidentally hit one of my crewmates, Jenny, with my helmet during the situation.

After all the drama, we were put on the safety raft before climbing back on board our raft, where we had some snacks before the last few rapids some level 4. thankfully we paddled well and got through them without tipping over. We then arrived at the end of our journey and got out of the raft onto the banks where we went to a little building, where lunch was waiting for us. where I could admire my sunburns.

We got back on the bus and drove the hour back to our camp, where we set up our tents and I managed to squeeze in a nap before dinner.
