Day 11 – Viet Long tunnels

11th April 2023

For breakfast today we had noodles, before taking a taxi to go to the war museum where we learnt about the Vietnamese war, albeit a slightly skewed version of history, as told by the communists who won’t he war. We got to see some of the photos of the war showing some of the atrocities committed there.

Next we walked back to our hotel, stopping on the way in a market to try and get some food, We managed to find this delicious Ban Mi restaurant and ordered one to go, which I ate a quarter off in the bus to our afternoon activity, the visit of the Viet long tunnels.

After driving an hour to the outskirts of the city, we got to the centre and followed our guide as he told us about his experience of being a vet and what the war was like, as well as showing us where the tunnels were, how they got in and out and the types of traps they would set up in the forest. We then got to try out an AK47 that would have been used in the war, which was very powerful and very loud. finally we crawled through a 100 m section of tunnels on our hands and knees to get the experience of what it would have been like in those tunnels.

Next we drove back to the city, after a quick ice cream stop to cool off, before going into the city, where we were swarmed by thousands of motorbikes all around us as we tried to get back to our hotel. Once there we quickly walked to the local street food market, where I got some delicious spring rolls and noodles before it was time to board our night bus (with our own private little cabin) to drive to the next city on our trip.
