Day 14 – Hoi An

14th April 2023

Today our train arrived at 7 am, and we drove for a bit to reach our hotel where we dropped off our bags, before walking to a local cafe where we got breakfast and I got a delicious avocado toast and passion fruit juice. Then we were brought around the city, crossing the different streets of the old town, learning a little bit more about it and where we could go visit when we had more free time.

The last stop on our tour of the old city, was a tailor, where I decided to get a coat made, as I needed one. So they asked me to choose a design before they took my measurements and asked what modifications I wanted to make to the design. After all of this, we got another ban mi, but this time chicken, before our afternoon’s activity.

For the afternoon, we all took bikes to bike around the countryside, however, the bikes were a bit shit, and definitely had questionable brakes. We first started cycling through the city, in the middle of the motorbikes and cars to our first stop, the house of a local tofu maker, who taught us how to make tofu, by showing us how the soy was ground into a paste using a mortar. We then got to try some with a ginger honey sauce, which was good. Next, we continued our journey this time through rice paddies and little villages before stopping at a local organic farm, where they showed us how they grow the various different vegetables and herbs they use. finally, we continued and reached our final stop, where we got to hop on to a bucket boat, a round boat where they sailed us down the river for a bit and spun us on it on the way.

Back on dry land, we got some fruits before taking our bikes back and cycling to the riverfront where we were met with a boat, on which we loaded our bikes as it sailed down the river to the centre of the city, so we could just get back on our bikes and finish the last kilometre in the middle of all the rush hour traffic, trying not to die.

For dinner, we went back to the old city centre, where we first went back to the Taylor for them to check the fitting before we had some delicious spring rolls in a local restaurant.
