Day 9 – Chambok homestay

9th April 2023

Today we tried to get up to watch the sunrise, but unfortunately when we reached the beach, we saw that the horizon was covered in clouds from last night’s storm. We still got to see some of the colours of the sunrise, but weren’t able to get the full experience. After breakfast we all got on the ferry for another 2 hour journey back to mainland, thankfully I was able to catch up on some of those zzz I had missed in the night by just lying on the floor of the boat as it rocked me to sleep.

Once back on the mainland, we drove 3 hours with a quick stop for lunch to reach our homestay, in the city of Chambok. There we walked around the village for a bit, seeing the kids wave at us as we walked past their house. After a bit we climbed on the back of a Cambodian Tractor, a sort of long tractor mixed with a lay-down Harley Davidson motorbike. We drove through the village until we reached the Cambodian “Grand Canyon” (a gross over-exaggeration) a 4m high structure made of rock and sand eroded by the river. We walked around there for a while taking pictures, until we got back on our tractor to go back to the community centre. There we were served dinner, with curry and noodles.

Following the dinner, we headed to our family, where they brought us to our room, with mattresses on the floor and a simple mosquito net to protect us.
