Day 23 – Vang Vieng

23rd April 2023

Today we woke up and were met by the pickup trucks again, this time also loaded with kayaks, who drove us to the river. there after a quick safety briefing, we climbed aboard and started paddling down the river. as we paddled our 5km journey, we encountered cows and water buffaloes drinking by the riverside, whilst also seeing families chilling by the water, doing their laundry or fishing, all smiling at us as we went by.

After this section, we stopped for a swim and then got off our kayaks to go visit a cave, where we were put in tubes and left to float gently down the river into the cave, only illuminated by our torchlights. as we reached the end of the cave, we got out of our tubes and walked the reminder of the cave, ducking down to avoid hitting the ceiling and the bats. after getting out alive we ate barbecue chicken skewers with fried rice before doing another visit of a cave, this time however it was dry so we quickly walked through it.

We then got back into our kayaks, and continue paddling down river, encountering locals with their families relaxing by the river, their children splashing us as we went along. after 3 km we reached the riverside and were met with the pickup truck to bring us to a lagoon where we could spend the next few hours swimming, sunbathing and chilling.

For dinner we walked to a nearby restaurant and got some tasty pad Thai, in preparation for being in Thailand in 3 days.
