Day 5 – Phnom Penh

5th April 2023

Today was another long travel day, as we made our way to the capital city of Cambodia, Phnom Peng. We got up early and after a quick breakfast, were greeted with a full sized buss just for us, which was great because it meant that we could each have a full row to ourselves to sleep. The journey to Phnom Peng lasted about 7 hours, but we stopped a few times along the road, to try different things. At the first stop we were introduced to some lady that was cooking coconut sticky rice by the side of the road in bamboo, which she then shaved the outside of the bamboo after it was cooked. This meant that to eat the rice, you could just peel the bamboo off. Our next stop was for lunch overlooking a lake, which was a bit dry as it is the dry season.

Our final stop before arriving, just as we got out the bus we were accosted by some kids which were varying tarantulas and just placed one on my arm, it felt very weird with its sticky legs, thankfully they were defanged. Next our guide made us try grilled tarantula legs, which tasted a bit like chicken.

After the long journey which consisted of a lot of naps, we reached Phnom Peng, where after dropping off our bags, we walked through the city, next to some municipal buildings and the river front to the night market. At the night market we sat down on the ground like locals and ordered our food and drinks, which were very good noodles.
