Day 8 – Koh Rong

8th April 2023

Today after breakfast we met our guide, who bought us on a walking tour of the island to see the village. We started by walking to the local school, crossing the only real road on the island (still under construction) Our guide made us stop to try some local rice noodles and then showed us the school including some of the classrooms. Our next stop was the temple, before we walked into the city centre and tried another local snack, shaved ice with some various toppings. Next we walked by a few kids playing handball so we joined them, and played terribly for a bit with them, before we walked by the seafront back to our hotel.

At the hotel we chilled by the sea on sea loungers whilst eating lunch and taking a nap.

In the afternoon we boarded a boat to go snorkelling in some corrals not too far away from our hotel. There we saw giant black sea urchins and clams with purple or blue lips that would retract if you got too close, we also saw a couple parrot fish.  After that quick snorkel experience, we boarded the boat where we all tried to fish and failed miserably. We watched the sunset from the boat, before the boat sailed to a different spot and waited until it was pitch black, before making us jump in the water. There in the water in the dark of the night you could see bioluminescent plankton light up as you moved your arms under water. At first it looked like your arms were making bubbles as they moved underwater, and the bubbles were dimply illuminated, but when you looked closer they looked like thousands of tiny stars, which you could make appear by just moving around.

After that magical experience we came back for dinner on the island and tried to see them again to get a photo, but they weren’t bright enough on land to quite capture them.
