Day 12 – Petra

26th July 2021

Today we woke up early at 5 am for our visit to Petra, we went downstairs and grabbed breakfast and a picnic, before heading on our way to the ancient city of Petra at 6 am.

When we arrived at the main visitor gate, we got our tickets and walked into the centre, we walked down an open area next to a dry river before reaching a canyon called the Sik.

After walking for about 30 mins the Sik opened up and we got to see the beautiful Treasury of Petra through the edges of the canyon. When we arrived, there were almost no other tourists, so we got to take some pictures of the whole place to ourselves. We took a few photos before continuing through Petra to go visit other Petra buildings in the stone. We walked down father into the valley where we got to see more buildings including some tombs.

Whilst we were walking our guide, Monty would tell us more about the city and its history. After walking through the valley, we decided to go visit the monastery one of the biggest carved buildings of Petra and another must-see after the treasury. Before starting our hike, we took a quick break to eat our sandwiches even though it was only 10 am, then we started our one-hour hike, through a set of stairs carved in the stone. When we got to the top, we were able to once again take photos by ourselves, and took a quick break on some couches, next to a dog who had followed us the whole way up and a cat who wanted all our food.

Next after getting back to the valley, a few of us decided to do another trek, we walked up another steep hill for another hour until we reached a viewing spot across and above from the Treasury. There we grabbed a few photos, and we took a quick break with a very expensive drink. Once we were done, we turned around and went back into the valley, where we explored some tombs and a church dug in the stone. However, only two of us managed to visit the church since the others had mistakenly thought that nothing was interesting up the set of stairs where it was located.

Finally, after all that hiking, we went back to the Treasury, which was full of people, we sat on some couches next to the shops and waited here for a bit, before walking towards the exit after being in Petra for almost 9 hours. At the exit, we went to the shop and bought traditional headgear they even put eyeliner on me to make me look more like a bit more like a local Bedouin.

We got back onto the bus and went back to the hotel but not before a quick stop to buy ice cream. When we arrived, I took a few photos on the roof of my new headgear before going to take a shower, where unfortunately the makeup wore out, so I looked like a panda.

For dinner, we left the hotel and walked 10 minutes to a local restaurant where we ordered the recommended meal, which was Shawarma, which was delicious but so big that even shared between three of us it was too much.
