Day 7 – Blue Hole Diving

23rd February 2022

Today I woke up at 5am and tried not to make noise when I woke up to not disturb my roommates but alas, i accidentaly dropped my metal bottle so i ended up waking everybody. I then left the hotel and walked in the empty island to reach the diving center. There they served us a little breakfast and gave us a briefing about the days trip and made us get onboard the ship. The ship sarted its 2 hour journey to the Belize Blue hole, but as we exited the reef, the boat started it hiting strong waves and was bouncing up and down a few meters each time wich made a bit seasick so i had to go sit at the back of the boat, unfortunately the back of the boat is open to the elements and meant that for every bounce the boat did, it would hit the water and cause a hige splash shich would splash back into the back of the boat, exactly where i was sitting. So at least i was feeling less sick but was soaking wet and cold instead.

After 2 hours of this (thankfully not the full 2 hours) we reached the blue hole. Our guide gave us a briefing about the activities and what we would be doing underwater, including the different signs we would be using. Once we were brieffed we got on our gear and dropped into the water. There we decended quickly down to 40 meters, and as we reached the 40 meters deph, we saw these giant stalactites hanging from and overhand, where we could swim through them. Unfortunately that is when the troubles began, i started feeling the effects of oxigen narcosis (feeling drunk underwater) and signed to our guide that i was feeling it so he came up to me and made me move up a few meters up to let the effect fade, before letting me rejoin the group once we were out of the deepest deph. but alas i was not done with problems, because i was burning air much faster than the group, so i started entering the red zone (20% of my tank) with 10-20 minutes left before we could reach back the surface safely. (you have to make certain stops at certain dephs to let your body get rid of the nitrogent hat has accumulated in your body due to going so deep). So once again, i signed to our divemaster that i was in trouble and he sent me to the otherdivemaster, who gave me his emergency resprator and told me to start breathing through it. So i spent the next 15 minutes attached by the respirator to him following him around, just above him as we swam around to the various safety stops and let our body get used to the air. Then just as we had finsihed the safety stop, he let me go back to my own respirator and go back up slowly to the surface. Due to this i didnt really see as much of the blue hole as possible, but it was still quite fun.

Back ont he surface I went back onto the boat, and the boat bough us to the next dive site which was located next to an island called half moon caye. there we went down much less deep around 25 meters and swam in between the reefs, seeing all the corals around us, crossing through valleys and overhangs to see the whole reef. As we were swimming we would occasionally encounter some curious reef sharks, who would come up close to us and just swim a few meters away peacefully. the dive lasted about 40 minutes, but once again i burned through my oxigen too quickly so i had to leave the group by myself, do my safety stop and head back to the surface, whilst just following them but froma. few meters higher. There I rejoined another group that was getting onto the boat, and got back in.

Our next stop on this adventure was lunch, we docked on the hald moon key island and were served lunch (chicken and rice) on the boat before going out with our lunch to sit on the picknic tables by the water on the beach. after finishing lunch we explored the islnad a little bit, going to see a viewing platform located in the middle, where we could see the local birds hanging out on the tree tops of the canopy. Then we headed back onto th boat for our final divesite, located a few minutes away, there we went down to 15 meters and saw a beautul reef full of lots of different shapes of corals, very alive, there was less big wildlife there, but the corals were great. thankfully this time even though we were under water for almost 50 mins, i didn t burn through all of my air too quickly.

as we were done with the diving, the boat turned around to do the 2 hour journey back to Caye Caulker. so i lied down at the back of the boat in the sun for a bit, but as we started crossing a rough patch of sea once more (but not nearly as rough as the morning) i started feeling a bit seasick again so i sat at the back of the boat and dozed off there until we arrived at caye caulker.

There i went back to the hotel, where i was finally able to fix my phone, which had died as soon as we had gotten on the boat in the morning, and had meant i wasnt able to take any photos with it and met up with the rest of my gadventures tour for us to go to dinner in a local restauraant, where i got jerk chicken which was a little bit spicy but tasty. We then headed back to the hotel and i decided to go to sleep as i had had a long day and was quite tired.
