Day 1 – Flight to Cancun

17th February 2022

Today I woke up and finished packing my bags before getting in the car to go to Charles de Gaule getting caught in the tons of traffic around Paris, but I still managed to make it 3 hours early, aka the bare minimum. Thankfully I even made it through check-in and security so quickly that I had to waste 2 hours lounging around the airport next to my gate. 2 hours which turned into 3 hours as my flight got delayed.

This slight change in timings meant that by the time my original flight landed, I would have missed my connecting flight to Cancun and would have gotten stuck in Montreal, which would have been good because I could have annoyed some friends who live there but also have gotten some free money from the airline. however I was not fortunate enough and even though we landed 2 hours late, they delayed the departure of my connecting flight by an hour just so they wouldn’t have to pay me, how rude.

However, on the plus side, the seats in this aircraft were very comfortable when the plane wasn’t going through a rollercoaster due to all the turbulence everywhere on earth that day, thanks to storm Eunice. I managed to sneak in a few Disney movies in between the 2 lunches and before you knew it I was in Montreal, disappointed I hadn’t missed my flight.

On the second flight, I wasn’t so fortunate, the airline was probably getting revenge on me for hopping to miss my flight so the seat was very uncomfortable, and they didn’t even have any movies.

Finally, at 10:30 pm I landed in Cancun, and managed to get my luggage which was soaking wet even though there was not a drop of rain, they probably felt they needed to wash my luggage for some reason. From there I ventured out into Mexico and was immediately accosted by non-licensed taxi drivers trying to convince me that the bus to Playa del Carmen wasn’t running so I had to get on their bus, but I called their bluff and went to another terminal via the shuttle, where I was able to purchase a ticket to my final destination.

The bus journey was uneventful and I arrived at my hostel at around 1 am, where I was upgraded to a single room “due to an issue with my original room” I think they probably sold the bed I had booked since I arrived so late, so I’m glad for the upgrade! Just before going to bed, I did some research for my plan for the following day and booked a bus trip to go to Chichen Itza.
